Hemingway, a Man of His Time

Ernest Hemingway is probably the most published U.S author in Cuba. The Cubans have enjoyed several of his titles, such as The Old Man and the Sea, a short story that led him to the Nobel Prize in Literature, For Whom The Bell Tolls, considered as an ode to the Spanish Civil War.

The list includes The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms, The Snows of Kilimanjaro and Islands in the Stream, in the latter most of the story takes place in our country and in places where Hemingway lived for years, such as his farm in Havana, now a museum.

Hemingway was more than a writer and became a character. He made a novel from his life and published it to the world. He was famous as an artist and was really interested for people who saw him as a star.

All the literary work of this outstanding narrator and journalist is autobiographical, as he said in an interview:

“I always try to write on the principle of the iceberg. There is seven-eighths of it underwater for every part that shows.”

In his book Islands in the Stream, he shows autobiographical elements by means of a personal experience. During World War II Hemingway loaded the yacht Pilar down with heavy artillery and small arms. And in his book he tries to detect German submarines off the Cuban coast which came as a custodian and control of arms trafficking. Besides this fact the protagonist of these lines continues as honored guest at the famous bar El Floridita in Havana and his image is perpetuated in the house of San Francisco de Paula. All these elements indicate his presence in our country and in the lives of the Cuban people.

Also in Cuba takes place novel To Have and Have Not, representative of Gerardo Machado’s dictatorship, and the short story The Old Man and the Sea, inspired by the life of a fisherman from Cojimar coastal town of Havana.

Hemingway had a wide knowledge of the realities he used to express and all his books narrate the experiences he had in the countries he knew or lived. His ideas can be summed up in one of his quotes: "But man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated."

Antifascist fighter, a friend of our people and our Revolution, Hemingway was not only an original creator, but a man of his time.

Ernest Miller Hemingway was born on July 21, in l899, in Oak Park, Illinois, USA, but Cuba, his second motherland, recalls him on his birthday.

Ernest Hemingway es, posiblemente, el escritor norteamericano más publicado en Cuba. Los cubanos hemos podido disfrutar El viejo y el mar, obra que le permitió al célebre escritor el Premio Nobel de Literatura, Por quien doblen las campanas, considerada como un canto a la Guerra Civil Española.

También han sido editadas Fiesta, Adiós a las Armas, y una antología de cuentos titulada Las nieves del Kilimanjaro y el volumen: Islas en el Golfo, en el que una buena parte de la historia transcurre en nuestro país y en lugares donde Hemingway viviera durante años, como por ejemplo, su espaciosa quinta habanera, hoy convertida en museo.

Fue más que un escritor, se convirtió en personaje, hizo de su vida una novela, y la puso a disposición del mundo, fue famoso como un artista y su realidad le interesó a la gente que lo vio como una estrella.

Toda la obra de este insigne narrador y periodista contiene una base autobiográfica directa, como él mismo señaló en una entrevista:

“Siempre trato de escribir con el principio del Iceberg. Éste conserva siete octavas partes de su masa debajo del agua por cada parte que deja ver…”

En su obra Islas del Golfo se muestran elementos directamente autobiográficos, pues incluye una vivencia personal. Resulta que durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial Hemingway artilló su yate Pilar, y tal como lo muestra en su libro, se dedica a detectar submarinos alemanes en las costas cubanas los cuales se acercaban como custodio y control del tráfico de armas. Además de ese dato el protagonista de estas líneas continúa en el tiempo como huésped honorario en el famoso bar El Floridita de la capital cubana y su imagen se perpetúa en la casona de San Francisco de Paula. Todos estos elementos dan fe de su presencia en nuestro país, y en la vida de los cubanos.

También se desarrollan en la Isla la novela Tener y no tener representativa de los años del machadato, así como el relato de El viejo y el mar, inspirado en la vida de un pescador de Cojímar, poblado costero de La Habana.

Hemingway tenía un conocimiento íntimo de las realidades que expresaba y de ahí el hecho de que todos sus libros relaten las vivencias de los países que conoció y donde vivió. Otro de sus valores es la dimensión en la que desenvuelve a los personajes que podría sintetizarse en una de sus frases: “Un hombre puede ser destruido, pero no derrotado”.

Luchador antifascista, amigo de nuestro pueblo y su Revolución, Hemingway no fue solo un creador original, sino un hombre de su tiempo.

Este 21 de julio se conmemoró un nuevo aniversario del natalicio del gran escritor Ernest Miller Hemingway, nacido en Oak Park, en el estado de Illinois, Estados Unidos en l899.
